Are you curious how this functions in practice? Lets take a look at some examples. A short description of the OEM and the supplier will be provided. Then the Build to Requirements question will be formulated, and then we discuss the parts that went great and the parts that can be improved.
Case study 1
The OEM develops metrology machinery. The supplier develops, produces and assembles mechatronical systems and modules.
The OEM wants to focus on the development of specific metrology solutions. The machine, with a solution for very specific positioning of the samples that need to be measured is completely outsourced to the supplier. This resulted in an improvement in the time to market for the OEM.
The challenge was the coordination of all the aspects in the collaboration. Questions like these were raised:
Who pays for an unforseen innovation risk;
how will discussions about continious changes in specifications reimbursed;
how will the responsibility about warranty be divided?
